At that time, there was a rise in what was the early concept of shopping malls. Large stores had many things sold in them and floorwalkers were something like shop managers. They would wear fancy clothes and walk through the stores and the complex and monitor what was going on. They would look at how the shoppers are behaving and if they are causing problems, and would also supervise the salespeople and monitor whether they're doing their jobs correctly. Nowadays their job does not exist on such a scale since the security is done by local guards or the police, while the sales people are monitored by their managers in individual stores.
