What Alexis de Tocqueville wrote about American democracy's effect on personal ambition was that American democracy didn't inspire men to aspire for more than wealth and power. He believed that democracy at its current state only had such an effect on people that they would want to become rich and important in the state, instead of making people fight for their most fundamental human rights and equality. He wrote that there was something wrong with American democracy and that it should be changed at any cost so as to create a truly democratic country.
