The printing invented by the tang chinese that made possible for books to be made available for the masses was the printing effected through blocks made of wood. The first use of these blocks was to reproduce buddhist texts on textiles. Eventually they were also used to print books. The oldest surviving such book is a buddhist scripture dated to the year 868 of our era.
