How did relations between the U. S. and Soviet Union change when Mikhail Gorbachev became the Soviet leader

    Reagan believed Gorbachev wanted to truly reform communism and opened negotiations with him

    Mikkhail Gorbachev was a moderate communist leader whose intentions was to improve the relations witht the west and to restructure the government and the economy in the Soviet Union.

    His policies Perastroika and Glassnot were seen as new, democratic changes to the soviet government system.

    The US - Soviet relations did not intensify and in fact got better during the tenure of Gorbachev.
