    Athens was considered one of the more intellectually, artistically, philosophically, and politically advanced Ancient Greek cities.

    Athens. Named after the Greek goddess Athena. Athena was the virgin goddess of reason, intellegent activity, arts and literature. Daughter of Zeus, she was born unusually, she was not born from her mother. But came bursting out of ger farhers forhead clad in armor for she was also the goddess of war tactics.

    She was Zeus' favorite child and was allowed to use some of his weopons including his thunderbolt!

    She became the patron goddess of Athens after winning a contest against Poseidon.
