Martin Luther believed in sola scriptura, the belief that only faith alone is required to be saved. This contrasted with Catholicism, which believed faith AND good works would lead to salvation. He also believed that everyone should interpret the Bible for themselves. In 1517, he published his 95 Theses that condemned the corruption of the Catholic Church, One example being the selling of indulgences. This day, October 31, 1517 signified the beginning of the Protestant Revolution. He had created a new religion, Protestantism, specifically called Lutheranism. Additionally, it weakened the Holy Roman Emperor's power because he decided the religion for those living under his empire. He didn't like Lutheranism, tried to put an end to it but finally gave in and established the Peace of Augsburg in 1555, giving the people the freedom to choose between Catholicism and Lutheranism.
