The Republican Party was he political party that opposed government expansion to solve social problems in the twentieth century.

    Explanation:

First of all, almost the majority of Republicans opposed government expansion to solve social problems. They were very opposed to many things like high taxes for the common people but proper taxes to industrial entities. They didn't support slavery and looked to extinguish it. Republicans also looked for a society rich in moral values that could organize itself to not be forced or limited by the government. They opposed so much government expansion that they believed in the free market and the same access to opportunities by all the players in it. The republican party believed in equal rights for everyone in all the spheres of society and that is why the republican party is the correct answer.
