They were very opposed to many things like high taxes for the common people but proper taxes to industrial entities. They didn't support slavery and looked to extinguish it. Republicans also looked for a society rich in moral values that could organize itself to not be forced or limited by the government. They opposed so much government expansion that they believed in the free market and the same access to opportunities by all the players in it.
