Japan attacked the US in 1941 with the famous start of World War II, this episode was called Pearl Harbor

    Explanation:

They were attacked by five ships which greatly hurt the US, not the main Japanese objective was to destroy the three American aircraft carriers that were in the Pacific, but these were not really present - the Enterprise was returning from a voyage, the Lexington had departed some days before and the Saratoga was in San Diego being repaired in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Taking most of the United States' warships out of circulation was regarded, in both armies and by most observers worldwide, as a tremendous success for the Japanese.
