Why did most African Americans migrate West from Southern States in the late 1870's

Because after the end of slavery and the civil war the South was still very segregated and because of the amount of money the Confederacy put towards the war the South was very poor so the promise of cheap land in the west where you could build a life for yourself and your family was very appealing.
