    The objective of the Kyoto Protocol is to reduce by 5.2% the emissions of greenhouse gases in the world, in relation to 1990 levels, during the period 2008-2012. It is the main international instrument for dealing with climate change.

    To this end, the Protocol contains objectives for the industrialized countries to reduce emissions of the six greenhouse gases caused by human activities: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6).
