They considered that unnecessary complexity and excessive conformity to rules and to social mores ruined the individual's inherent tendency for good.

    Within such line of reasoning, Transcendentalist artists were idealists that considered human feelings to be pure in intention and essence and that such feelings, applied to empirical experience infused a person with both knowledge and understanding of human beings and nature which for them were akin to the true understanding of the universe.
