    3000 B. C., the Sumerian civilization

    Explanation:

"According to most historians, the earliest writing dates back to 3000 B. C. It came from the Sumerian civilization, which was located in what is now modern-day Iraq. The Sumerians wrote on clay tablets using reeds. Their form of writing is now known as cuneiform. It doesn't look much like what we would think of as writing today. In cuneiform, a symbol stands for a word. Early cuneiform writings appear to be lists of objects with numbers. These lists were most likely written down for business or trade purposes."
