The Council of Trent (1545-1563) was a council of the Catholic Church prompted by the Protestant Reformation; in fact, it was the most important movement of the Catholic Counter-Reformation. The main purpose of the council was to condemn and refute Protestant beliefs. Protestants endorsed salvation by faith alone (sola fide); this position was condemned as heresy by the Catholic Church during the Council of Trent
