    One major advantage of living in barrio was the fact that the diet of the Mexican Americans (particularly, the elderly) was preserved. This was a significant advantage that they had when compared to the Americans living in the country. So, they continued their same diet and only ate fast food moderately. They were also able to bring with them their distinct cultural traditions and beliefs.
