    a. It is largely privately owned - - Media companies are owned by private companies and/or individuals.

    The US is a capitalistic country as well as a democracy which means individuals control and own media companies. The US has regulated the media during times of war or produced their own media for war effort but does not directly control media outlets at any other time. In the 1980s, under Reagan, a piece of media regulation was repealed which required balanced and fair reporting of the news. Since then the media has been allowed to operate freely with whatever bias they wish to present.
