It was based on the natural rights theory. He explains in the Two Treaties of Government that the people gave the power the government. It means they have the right to take that power if they experience that their rights own rights are not given to them which means that the people are in a situation of oppression. Thus, it justifies their action to overthrow the government.

    Social contract

The concept of social contract stated the government maintained power only at the consent of the governed (the citizens).

John Locke was an Enlightenment thinker who argued the government was at the service of the citizens. The government was allowed to continue governing as long as the people agreed to the government. Under this theory, the citizens had the right to overthrow or change their government if it was not meeting the needs of the group. This social contract ensured the rights of citizens were protected, not taken away by the government.
