Why douglass and Tubman had to be private about their actions to end slavery

As formed slaves themselves they feared to return to slavery, being attacked or being sought after by previous owners.

Harriet Tubman, born 1820, successfully fled from here slave owners and moved North. While her escape was enough for her to remain private her continued actions were much riskier and required secrecy. Tubman continues to venture South, to free slaves that included some of her family members. Frederick Douglass, born around 1818, and would have been private about his actions at the beginning out of fear. However, after a while, he became a published author on abolition and gave public speeches both nationally and internationally.
