What is the main reason New England colonies had fewer slaves than the southern colonies

    Because they weren't as Agriculturally based as the Southern colonies were.

    Southern states had a much different standard work. The south needed more slaves because they had plantation which needed plain manual labor. Northern states had more factories and were more industrial so they really didn't need slaves
