    After Mexico won the Independence War in 1821, the Santa Fe Trail was established. It connected Independence, Missouri with Santa Fe, New Mexico. The trail was pioneered by William Becknell and served as a vital commercial route until the construction of the railroad to Santa Fe in 1880.

    In the beginning, traders were arrested because of the contraband they carried, but the economic crisis in Mexico finally favoured the route since it provided a market for the local products and manufactured goods.

    The Cimarron Crossing, one of the most dangerous branches, was the one tht crossed the Oklahoma Territory
