Did lincoln free the slaves or the slaves freed themselves?

Actually he saved the union but not the slaves. the slaves free themselves. According to what Lincoln said " my paramount in this struggle is to save the union, and it is not either to save or destroy slavery." which means that he wasnt planning to free or save the slaves all he wanted was to save the Union.
