    In 1215, the tenants-in-chief secured Magna Carta from King John, which established that the king might not levy or collect any taxes. Parliament progressively limited the power of the monarchy over centuries. Scotland and Ireland merged with England to become Parliament of the UK. The Glorious Revolution came in 1689.
