The main idea behind the Enlightenment movement was to firstly stop the abuses by Churches and state and then focus on liberty, reason, progress, tolerance and fraternity. It was the age of reasoning and so was also a philosophical movement that started in the 18th century in Europe. This is why the age is also known as the Age of Reason. The Age of Enlightenment was very closely followed by the scientific revolution. From this fact, the impact of the Age of Reason can very well be gauged.
