Most of the cases the Supreme Court hears are appeals from lower courts ... However, it may act only within the context of a case in an area of law over which it has jurisdiction. The Court may decide cases having political overtones, but does not have power to decide nonjusticiable political questions.

For a year, the Supreme Court heard less cases out of the worry that the court was split 4-4 after the death of Antonin Scalia.

Once Justice Gorsuch was put on the Court, the Supreme Court knew they had a full complement of judges and could hear cases without deadlock.

That being said, the Supreme Court hears VERY few cases.
