Why do internet companies gather information on individuals?

Internet companies gather information to sell an individual's information such as the web history, app usage, and data for money. They sell the information to companies that heavily invests in advertising, buying and selling of things, and the government for them to spy. The internet privacy that the internet providers has promised to their costumers has been violated with their own actions.
