How did Jefferson's purchase of Louisiana simultaneously contradict his theory of government and also support his idea of republicanism?

Jefferson was anit-federalist so expanding its powers by making a purchase of so much land contradicted that part of his philosophy. But it also was supported by the people of America and so would be justified by republicanism.
