How Aztec nation created wealth from surrounding nations

The Aztecs used surrounding nations as slaves, which is, though horrible, free labor. And many times they even using them as sacrifices. This turns out badly for them at the end, as the other nations later become allies with the Spanish who eventually take the Aztecs down.
