Taft and Roosevelt have been close confidants ever since the war regime. Taft was Roosevelt's chief emissary and confidant and at the same time, the secretary of war. Roosevelt swore that he would not extend his term after upon his victory in 1904. However, he did not want just any man to replace him. He especially handpicked Taft to succeed him as president.
