Knights of Labor were founded by Uriah Stephens and was originally set up like a secret society. During the economic downturn in the early 1870s, the union built a network of local groups. The goal of the Knights was o include men and women of every creed and color. In 1879 Terence V. Powderly became the leader of the Knights. He ended its secrecy making it the first truly national labor union in the US. The Knights worked for improvements with Powderly for the workers. The goals now were an 8 hour workday, equal pay for equal work for ken and women, and an end to child labor. Th Knights had both skilled and unskilled workers. Several Knights were involved in the Haymarket riot.
