Answer: post-communist regimes were born, but "Eastern Europe"is not a homogeneous entity. There are many differences between these countries. Baltic countries, Czech lands, Poland, Hungary, Balcan peninsula. It cannot be viewed as a one block. Monopoly of one party (Communist) was substituted by pluralism, new constitutions were adopted, in 1990s these countries started entering NATO whereas in ex-Yugoslavia nationalist war erupted (with the exception of Slovenia). Czechoslovakia was peacefully divided (January 1993) into Czech republic and Slovakia.
Explanation: entering the free and democratic world and European structures had to face sometimes repressed uncomfortable questions of the past (before WW II) ... nationalism (Yugoslavia), question of German minorities (Czechoslovakia) or Hungarian minorities (Slovakia), return of ancient aristocracy requiring its property back. Also Catholic church required its property (frequently significant) back. Soviet Union was transformed into Russian federation and "Union" was dissoved. Many "new" countries came into existence looking for their new ideology and foreign policy.
