Containment is the policy that the United States adopted after World War II. The goal of this policy was to stop the spread of communism on a global scale. The United States was worried about the spreading of communism at this time due to the increased global power of the Soviet Union.

The US disliked the system of communist because they felt that it limited individual freedoms and allowed for little innovation. Stopping the spread of this institution became one of America's most important foreign policies during the Cold War.
