    Explanation:

    Very simply put, this conflict was due France demanding payment from the US and the US (Adams) said the US did not owe the new monarchy anything, their debt was to the previous rulers. There is no mention anywhere of the US giving any claims in Canada to the French. Although it is mentioned that Napoleon wanted their claim of Louisiana from the Spanish. This conflict did result in the termination of the only official alliance the US, until more than a century later.
