After the passage of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War, slavery was abolished. However, many southerners were still reluctant to accept Black people as equals. This was due to racism, as well as the endurance of culture and prejudice. This led to Black people suffering many limitations during Reconstruction. One of the ways in which the federal government tried to combat this was by sending soldiers to the South in order to enforce antidiscrimination laws.
