The US gained influence in C. Asia and the Americas as a result of the Spanish-American War. More specifically, that war ejected Spanish control from Cuba (in the Americas) and the Philippines (in Asia), placing US influence there in its stead. This allowed from a greater deal of US imperialism abroad during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
