Venezuela originated its name from the Italian cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. He sailed along the northern coast of South America in 1499, and upon reaching the Lake Macaraibo, he observed distinctive stilted huts built on the water which reminded Vespucci of the Venetian homes in his native land so he named the region Venezuela.
