In 1890, the Sherman Antitrust act made it illegal to have a monopoly over any part of United states trade or commerce. Although it did however allow for what is known as 'innocent monopoly', wherein businesses could have competitive prices. The idea of an innocent monopoly was put in place to protect the consumer against artifically raised prices.
