Lee believed that there were only lightly armed cavalry in front of him and if he could break through he could unite his army with that of General Joseph E. Johnston. However, the cavalry was backed up by heavy Union artillery and Lee found he was trapped. Later that day, he surrendered to Grant and 28,000 troops were given parole - having to put down their guns, but able to return to their homes and not be prosecuted.
