The cause of British debt was the French and Indian War.

Explanation:

In 1763 Britain had just won a major war against France. The war had been fought in Europe and was called the Seven Years War, but it was also fought in the colonies and was known there as the French and Indian War. This long conflict proved to be very costly for the British government, and it found itself in great National debt once the war was over. This economic crisis would be a long-term cause of the American Revolution because the British began to impose a series of strict taxes on the colonies to try and resolve their debt.
