The Japanese full invasion of China followed the fabricated incident of the Marco Polo bridge in Peking in 1937. The Japanese imperial army already occupied Manchuria, which was part of China. By then, the Nationalist government of Chiang Kai-shek and the guerrillas of the Chinese Communist Party had been fighting a civil war for almost a decade. With reluctancy and mutual distrust, both the Communists and the Nationalists joined forces to fight against the Japanese. The Communists mainly fought a guerrilla war behind the Japanese lines, and the Nationalists faced directly the advancing Japanese troops, suffering heavy losses and retreating to Chonqing. After the Japanese surrender of 1945, the civil war restarted.
