A Native American leader who had a great impact on negotiations with the federal government was Satanta.

    Explanation:

Satanta was a chief of the Kiowa, who was also known as the speaker of the Plains.

As the son of Red Tepee, a famous Kiowa shaman, Satanta was early on in the group of leaders in his tribe. Since he was also an eloquent and skillful strategist, which he often proved in negotiations as well as in military actions, he quickly gained chief dignity and was a very popular leader among the Kiowa. Between 1850 and 1874 he was the leader of many so-called Kiowa raids, in which horses were stolen, settlers kidnapped or soldiers attacked. After the former chief Dohasan died in 1866, he became the spokesman for the war advocates within the Kiowa tribe. Despite his warlike deeds, contemporary witnesses describe him as an open and always smiling negotiating partner. Contrary to his own stance, Satanta also recommended to his tribe to move to the intended reservation after the Medicine Lodge peace negotiations in 1867. However, just two years later, he called on the tribe to leave the reservation and fight the US Army. In November 1874, he surrendered after being defeated in the Palo Duro Canyon and was arrested again for violating probation requirements after his first detention. In 1878, he died by killing himself in prison.
