The first dynasty in China was Xia (2205 to 1575 BC).

Very little is known about the Xia. The Xia also take up the name Shang (1570 to 1045 BC).

The only thing known about them is that they had ruled much of the area along the Yellow River.

During the Qin Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty (the time was around 221 B. C. - A. D. 1840) the Chinese government divided the Chinese people in four groups / classes:

Landlord Craftsmen Merchant Peasant

Landlords and peasants constituted the two major classes, while merchant and craftsmen were collected into the two minor.

Also, Confucianism was developed in Ancient China, a philosophy stressing virtue, good governance and merit based promotion for government offices. This shall forever reside in their history.

Answer: Throughout most of China's history it was ruled by powerful families called dynasties. The first dynasty was the Shang and the last was the Qing. Ancient China also boasts the longest lasting empire in history.
