Rome's first civil war began as the result of a conflict between generals Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla.

The conflict between the generals originated from a dispute about the success of a military campaign against African king Jugurtha. Gaius Marius, was re-elected as consul and as a reward for having overthrown the African king. However, Sulla also claimed the victory and was given credit for the campaign. Finally, the dispute over power by the two generals finished to trigger the first roman civil war.
