    Mao Zedong launched the Cultural Revolution in 1966 in response to new communist policies that threatened economic equality. Mao believed that these new poilices were taking the party and China itself in the wrong direction. He called on the youth to purge the impure elements and revive the revolutionary spirit of 1949 which resulted in the independence of the People's Republic.
