The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution affected the relationship between the branches os the united states government because Lyndon Johnson wanted to claim more powers, and to expand the us presence in southeast asia. The united states entered fully into the vietnam war. The us intervened militarily in 1963 in support of south vietnam to prevent the communist expansion of the north.

The war that the usa lost it cost 58,000 american lives, generated multiple protest and plunged the country into the vietnam syndrome, which conditioned the us foreign policy of the 1970s and 1980s against military interventionism.
