After the conquest of Babylon by Persian ruler Cyrus the Great (539 BCE), called by the Babylonians themselves to get free from a pro-Assyrian ruler, Cyrus moved the capital of the empire to his capital, Susa. In this way, the center of power of the Middle East changed and the Semitic domination of Mesopotamia came to an end.
