The Glorious Revolution of 1688 increased the power of Parliament.

    Explanation:

The Glorious Revolution took place between 1688 and 1689, and was the result of a long-standing power struggle between the King and Parliament in England. By 1653, in the wake of the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell had dissolved Parliament as the Lord Protector and, until his death in 1658, ruled with dictatorial authority. Then came the reinstatement of the Stuart family with Charles II, but the division of power between Parliament and King was still unclear. However, Jacob II's ascension after Charles II's death in 1685 took place under calm conditions, although many feared that Catholics would gain too much power in England (Jacob was converted to Catholicism during a stay in France). The opposition to Jacob II grew rapidly in strength, but when he was aging and had no sons, it was expected that the Catholic monarch would become a short-lived parent. In 1688, however, his wife had a son, and at the same time the king interfered in religious matters. A group of leading nobles now approached William of Orange, who on November 5, 1688, went ashore with an army at Torbay on the south coast of England and marched towards London. Jacob II fled to France, and William and Mary could be hailed by Parliament as King and Queen after accepting the Bill of Rights, which established Parliament's power (including the prohibition of a standing army in the Declaration of Rights, and against taxation without Parliament being heard). The king's power had thereby been considerably limited.
