The Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 was a part of the Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984. The Sentencing Reform act removed parole in the federal system, although this didn't affect most of the state criminal justice systems that continued to use parole. It also led to the creation of the US Sentencing Commission. It also led to an increase in the inmate populations in prisons due to longer sentences that offered no option of parole. If this is not managed properly, this creates a very high amount of inmate idleness.
