The creation of national party conventions in the early 1830s allowed broader participation in nominating presidential candidates and in increasing the number of presidential candidates.

Presidential elections have occurred in the US quadrennially, starting in 1789. They incorporate both the procedure of competitor nomination and the consequent support for election. Since the 1830s, nomination has focused on national party conventions called to pick people to keep running for president and VP. Delegate choice for these traditions was for quite a while completely extralegal and dictated by local party conventions.
