Why did the colonies and Britain fail to achieve a compromise to avert hostilities?

A major way in which the colonies and Britain failed to achieve a compromise was that the colonists refused to have anything less than either taxation without representation, or no taxation at all, which the British government was unwilling to do since they had so many war debts.
