    Remove Union pressure in Virginia.

Virginia was a contested state which held the Confederate capital. Virginia split at the beginning of the Civil War with the western region becoming West Virginia and joining the Union in the war effort. The capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, was in Virginia as well so protecting the capital was important to the war effort for the South.
