    D. the reduction of salt production in India

    Explanation:

India was a colony of Britain in the 19th and 20th centuries. The British though decided to grant independence to India in the middle of the 20th century, shortly after the World War II ended. There were several reasons as to why the British made this move. One big reason was that the country was in a bad financial situation after the war, so it had to focus on its domestic economy and restore it. Also, the British army was weakened significantly, so using it to control such a vast area was not an option. The international pressure too was constantly increasing, as there was more and more pressure for ending the colonization around the world. Mahatma Gandhi was leading a peaceful independence movement, and the people were not obeying to their overlords anymore. Everything combined made it almost impossible for the British to keep India as colony, so they granted independence to it.
